USA-COMMERCE-AIRBUS-LE-MAYOR: Airbus / Boeing: Paris evokes an EU response without lifting of US sanctions
PARIS (Reuters) – Bruno Le Maire on Thursday took note of the United States’ decision to refrain from imposing new tariffs in the context of the transatlantic dispute over subsidies to Airbus and Boeing while raising the possibility of a European response if these sanctions persist.
The French Minister of Economy and Finance, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of a trip to customs officials in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, welcomed the absence of “escalation” of tensions in this folder.
However, he stressed that European products – including aeronautics and French wines in particular – remained subject to additional customs tariffs and hoped that a “final settlement” be found “as quickly as possible” in this dispute which has lasted for more. 15 years old.
Failing to reach such an agreement, and if ever the American sanctions were maintained, the European Union will have to “also prepare itself to respond with sanctions”, he warned.
