Chicago. The US city of Chicago has been rocked by serious rioting and looting after police shots on a suspect. People smashed numerous shop windows in the city center on Monday night and fought with the police.
More than a hundred people were arrested and 13 police officers injured, according to Police Chief David Brown. Around 400 officers were on duty.
According to Brown, the trigger was an exchange of fire between police officers and a suspect on Sunday afternoon. The police had been called because of an armed man. In a car chase, the 20-year-old suspect opened fire on the officers, Brown said. The police returned fire and injured the man. He was taken to a hospital.
As a result, there was a gathering, the situation had heated up due to misinformation, said the police chief. Looting was also called for on social networks. This led to the riot in the city center of the metropolis.
“It wasn’t an organized protest,” said Brown. “It was a pure crime incident.” Mayor Lori Lightfoot also strongly condemned the violence. It was not a question of legitimate protests, but “simply pathetic criminal behavior”.
After the death of the African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis at the end of May, there were protests against racism and police violence against black people across the country. On the fringes of the demonstrations there were repeated riots.
