The National News Agency Lebanese (ANN) reported that the head of the government declared Wednesday “a day of national mourning for the victims of the explosion in the port of Beirut.”
The authorities they had not yet offered a death toll several hours after the deflagration occurred in an explosive material warehouse in the port of the Mediterranean city.
According to ANN there are “several dead and wounded” as a result of the explosion, while the local chain LBCI reported that more than 500 wounded have arrived at the Hotel Dieu hospital, located in the center of Beirut.
Moments later, the Lebanese Minister of Health reported that at least 50 people died and 2,700 were injured.
The Lebanese Red Cross has not yet reported the number of people it has served, but said it is receiving “thousands of calls” to its emergency phone.
The organization has deployed more than 30 teams to care for those affected and has asked ambulances from all over the country to go to the capital, as it said through its official Twitter account.
At the same time, hospital centers and users on social media are urgently asking for blood donations and others say that the hospitals are overflowing.
