MEXICO CITY

Prevention and adherence to medical treatments are essential for patients with heart conditions in this health emergency, as they are more prone to complications in the event of catching Covid-19, explained Dr. José Antonio Magaña Serrano, head of the Insufficiency Division Cardiac and Transplantation of the Hospital de Cardiología of the Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI.

“All patients with cardiovascular disease must maintain close contact with the health personnel who treat them in order to make sure that the control goals are covered,” he said.

The IMSS specialist explained that although the vast majority of patients suffering from Covid-19 may have the disease asymptomatic or with mild symptoms, there is the possibility that 20 percent of them may worsen and within the complications there would be cardiovascular involvement.

“Direct cardiovascular involvement by Covid occurs as a form of inflammation and dysfunction of the heart muscle, a complication called myocarditis, which is rare but serious, and the other is thrombotic phenomena, clot formation at any level, in the legs, head, heart and it is mainly due to the fact that Covid-19 inflames the blood vessels ”, he specified.

The doctor José Antonio Magaña stressed that this affectation occurs mainly in people who already had dysfunction of this layer, such as people with obesity, diabetes, hypertension or with cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease or dyslipidemia (fat in the blood).

“In a vulnerable population such as Mexico, of patients with these chronic diseases, if they have Covid, they have a greater risk of complicating themselves and that is what we have to define very well,” he emphasized.

He clarified that having a previous metabolic or cardiovascular disease does not increase the risk of contagion, but in case of infection, they do have a greater chance of complicating at the heart level and generating heart failure, thrombosis or acute ischemia.

He recalled that in our country the most frequent heart diseases are ischemic heart disease (when the heart does not receive enough oxygenated blood to be able to nourish itself, due to the obstruction of its coronary arteries), and arterial hypertension, (when the blood pressure it is constantly elevated and affects the cardiovascular system).

The Social Security cardiologist highlighted that these diseases are the leading cause of death in Mexico for more than a decade. Every year more than 140 thousand people die from direct or indirect causes of cardiovascular disease.

“The problem lies in the late detection and mismanagement of risk factors, because our population, in addition to the genetic load, also has bad habits, such as obesity, lack of physical activity, poor nutrition and in case of who already have cardiovascular disease, in this case ischemic heart disease or hypertension, mismanagement, “he said.

It reported that approximately 10 percent of the consultations granted by Social Security in specialties are to attend to cardiovascular problems and in Family Medicine Units, this percentage reaches 40 percent, that is, four out of 10 adults who attend to consultation, they do it for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

“Our services and medical care were never closed to entitlement, that is, the IMSS was always concerned that patients had the doors open to continue being treated. We fight because those patients with chronic-degenerative diseases, particularly from what is our field of competence, do not stop being treated “, he stressed.
