Baltimore. Two people were killed and seven others were seriously injured in a natural gas explosion in Baltimore. Three row houses collapsed completely on Monday, a fourth was torn open by the explosion.
About 30 people came to emergency shelters, as the fire department in the American city announced. In total, more than 200 people were affected. At other properties windows broke, glass and rubble lay all over the neighborhood.
The cause of the explosion was unclear. Before the explosion, the operating company was not notified of any gas smell, as it announced on Monday evening. The newspaper “The Sun” reported that since 2019 the cases of gas leaks in Baltimore have increased. On average, two dozen were discovered every day, she reported to the federal supervisory authorities, citing reports from the operating company BGE. In Baltimore there are thousands of kilometers of ailing gas lines that need to be replaced. That could take two decades and cost a good billion dollars, the article said.
