Donald Trump employees have campaigned for the current US president to get a seat on famous Mount Rushmore. As the „New York Times“ reported, they approached the governor of the state of South Dakota, where the huge monument is located. Accordingly, they asked how the procedure for an additional president would work.

Mount Rushmore shows the images of former US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, carved into the stone. It is administered by the federal state, an extension is not actually an option.

Donald Trump: “This is my dream”

On several occasions Trump has toyed with the idea that his likeness should be seen on Mount Rushmore. According to a report by CNN, the US president had also approached the governor during a meeting in the White House with the words: “Do you know that my dream is to have my face on Mount Rushmore?” Kristi Noem thought it was more of a joke before realizing that Trump was serious.

On the US National Day, Trump gave a controversial address in view of the corona pandemic in front of the backdrop of Mount Rushmore. For the occasion, Governor Noem had given him a miniature version of the monument – with his head as the fifth in the presidential row.

The Mount Rushmore memorial opened in 1941. It shows the portraits of the most important US presidents to date. Their heads, carved in stone, are each around 18 meters high. The presidential gallery is also controversial because the rock formation belonged to a Native American tribe. A court upheld their claim, but the Lakota Indians refused to receive any compensation. They continue to reclaim the land. (rnd)
