The City of Verviers “will rely as much on prevention as repression in order to fight against Covid-19”, mayor Muriel Targnion announced on Tuesday in view of the epidemiological rebound experienced by the Walloon city, now considered to be one of the Belgian cities most affected by the virus.

In view of this observation, the mayor of Verviers has decided to prioritize certain targets and to adopt both an attitude that is sometimes preventive, sometimes repressive, in order to effectively fight against the virus which has taken hold on the banks of Vesdre. .

Awareness-raising actions will thus be carried out towards young people “strongly affected, if we analyze the figures communicated by the bodies responsible for testing. No doubt they are now paying the price for too much confidence in their invincibility”, estimates Ms. Targnion, who wishes to insist on wearing a mask and respecting social distancing.

This same line of conduct will be carried out “with our non-native population which does not seem to have applied the messages and obligations in relation to barrier gestures either”. The mayor admits that understanding concerns may have arisen, which is why she wishes to rely on the presidents of mosques and association officials in direct contact with foreign communities in order to convey information that is easier to understand.

Stewards from “Verviers Ambitions” as well as peacekeepers and members of municipal staff will be present in the streets to remind people of the rules and encourage the population to respect them.

The mayor also warns that the special Covid patrol will sanction by all legal means, including reports, people who do not respect the rules. Clubs, sports halls and places of worship will be particularly targeted.

The mayor, on the other hand, congratulates the traders and managers of catering establishments where the rules, including compulsory tracing concerning bars and restaurants, are respected.

The City has also decided to cancel all events until September 1, starting with the Urban Oasis which will be dismantled as soon as possible.
