Behind the attempted Bitcoin scam on Twitter would conceal three boys between 17 and 22 years old. The US justice department reported this. In addition to the 17-year-old from Tampa, Florida, whose name has remained anonymous, the other two accused are Mason Sheppard, 19, from southern England, and Nima Fazeli, 22, a resident of Orlando. On July 15, the three hacked Twitter accounts of characters like Jeff Bezos, Kim Kardashian and Barack Obama, posting a fake tweet with a donation request. According to federal prosecutor David L. Anderson, the three acted “for fun and not for profit”.
Anderson also said that “in the hacker community there is a false belief that attacks like the one on Twitter can be conducted anonymously and without consequences, but I want to tell potential criminals that if you break the law we will find you” .
The 17-year-old was indicted with 30 charges, including computer fraud and fraudulent use of personal information. “He is apparently a boy who has just finished high school,” explains Florida prosecutor Andrew Warren, “but we must not be misled. The attack conducted has had a magnitude never seen before.”
