After the ID.3 and ID.4, Volkswagen would also work on the development of a small accessible electric SUV, which would then be called ID.2.

Like many builders, Volkswagen is particularly investing in the electrification of its range, while a colossal fine of 4.50 billion euros hangs in its face next year. The Wolfsburg firm has therefore logically taken things seriously and quickly set about developing cleaner models, in order to forget the dieselgate, of course, but also to lower its average emissions. A strategy then materialized with the revelation of the news Volkswagen ID.3 at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, while the first deliveries will take place during the month of October. But the German brand does not intend to stop there, and plans to launch an entire electric range, announced by a series of concept unveiled a few years earlier. After the future ID.4, already formalized but still camouflaged, it is another vehicle which will also make its arrival a little later.

According to our colleagues from Caradisiac, which relay this information, this new model should take the form of a small compact SUV, and be called Volkswagen ID.2. This should then allow the manufacturer to make more volume, by posting a much more affordable price than that of the ID.3, with an entry ticket which would then turn around only € 20,000. A price then lower than that of the Volkswagen e-Up !, which starts as a reminder at 23,740 €. The goal ? Sell the maximum number of copies of this urban SUV, in order to lower the average emissions of vehicles sold, and thus limit the amount of the fine provided for by the European Union in 2021. If the information is still almost non-existent on this future model, our colleagues are very well informed, and already have a few things for us.

Arrival in four years

Unsurprisingly, this Volkswagen ID.2 will be based on the MEB platform dedicated to the Volkswagen group’s electric vehicles, just like the future ID.1, which will take the form of a zero-emission city car. The small SUV should for its part be offered in several configurations, then displaying powers ranging between 80 and 150 hp, for a range exceeding 300 kilometers for the entry-level version. A good performance, especially since this ID.2 will above all have a purely urban vocation. Our colleagues also point out that it could also be of great interest to rental companies, as well as communities looking for a clean, compact and affordable vehicle. In addition, it will also be available with all-wheel drive, a configuration which should offer it greater versatility, especially for use in the mountains for example.

However, we will still have to be patient before knowing more about this Volkswagen ID.2, alros that its presentation is not expected before 2023, for marketing the following year. The small SUV will then be produced alongside the ID.1 at the German factory in Emden.
