Pre-candidate for reelection in the capital, Mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB) and Governor João Doria (PSDB) voted together at the party’s convention on Saturday, 14, and gave a national tone to the party alliance formed around the toucan.
Vice Governor Rodrigo Garcia (DEM) and councilor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), announced yesterday as candidate for vice of Covas, followed the vote in a directory in Tatuapé (East Zone) which was the first of the PSDB after the foundation of the acronym.
The agreement between PSDB, MDB and DEM around Covas is part of a national articulation of the three acronyms that involves supporting the candidacy of deputy Baleia Rossi (MDB) for the presidency of the Chamber and the construction of a broad front against Bolsonaro in 2022.
“One step at a time. After this year’s elections, we will have a clearer indication of the strength of this union, which at the national level includes PSDB, MDB and DEM,” said Doria next to Covas after voting.
Also according to the governor, the alliance between the three parties represents the indication of a “democratic and liberal center” that “knows how to dialogue with the left and the right”
Doria also praised former mayor Marta Suplicy, who left Solidarity to support Covas on behalf of a broad front to fight Jair Bolsonaro in 2022.
“Marta Suplicy had a posture of high dignity and detachment when supporting Bruno Covas. She showed proof of political grandeur,” said Doria.
“So far nine parties have announced support for Bruno Covas’ candidacy: DEM, Pode, MDB, PSC, Progressistas, PL, PROS, Cidadania and PV. It is the biggest arc of alliances in this year’s municipal election bringing everyone together in São Paulo, ”said Wilson Pedroso, Covas campaign coordinator and former Doria chief of staff.
Covas and Doria were received in the Tatuapé directory by the militant Maria de Lourdes Silva, better known as Lourdinha, who founded the Tatuapé directory alongside Mário Covas in 1988. The vice candidate, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), cited this symbolism for talk about the national rapprochement between the MDB and the PSDB.
Doria, in her speech, also stressed that Bruno Covas’ coalition will give him the most TV time in the campaign. “As it is a more virtual than in-person campaign, TV time will have a greater influence than in the last election,” said Doria.
Covas made a brief statement, in which he said that the country needs dialogue, and ended his speech with the slogan “strength, focus and faith”. The mayor, however, did not answer questions from journalists.
The toucan convention started at 9 am and will end around 3 pm, in a totally virtual format. There will be a political act through the Zoom application, in which former Mayor Marta Suplicy, Mayor Rodrigo Maia, President of MDB Baleia Rossi and former Governors Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) and José Serra (PSDB) will participate .
