José Maria Monção, former mayor of the city of Cocal (Piauí), admitted to having stolen from the municipality when criticizing the current management of Rubens Vieira (PSDB). Monção stated: “I was mayor 3 times, I know about suffering. But neither did I steal as much as this one did, no. This is brazen, the sinkhole is sinking ”.
The statement was made at the MDB convention held on Sunday (6.set.2020). The former mayor asked for votes for the party’s mayoral candidate, doctor Cristiano Brito. Watch (1min16s):
The statement was met with laughter and applause. Monção admitted “until you have taken something, given it to the poor ”. And then he added, laughing: “If I was arrested, there is 1 reason ”.
The former mayor also said that “politician steals, but steals to give to the people. It is difficult for the guy to steal for himself ”-behavior that the current mayor would have adopted, according to Monção.
Problems with the Law
Monção was preventively arrested in 2009, suspected of participating in the R $ 2.6 million diversion from Fundeb (Basic Education Fund). He was also arrested in 2015 for falsifying City Hall documents in mid-2010 to approve the accounts of his administration as mayor and to run as a deputy in that year’s election. The sentence was converted into community service.
