In the middle of coronavirus, covid-19, thousands of people have given positive for a bacterial disease northwest of China: the brucellosis. The outbreak was caused by a leak at a biopharmaceutical company During the past year, this was announced by the authorities. What is it about? Here we tell you.

The news was confirmed by Lanzhou Health Commission, capital of Gansu province. It reported that at least 3,245 people had contracted the disease brucellosis, which is caused by contact with cattle that carry the brucella bacteria.

He also detailed that another thousand 401 people tested positive for the preliminary test. However, no deaths have been reported so far. The city’s Health Commission explained that in total, the authorities have examined 21,847 people.

This new outbreak occurred after a leak in the Zhongmu Lanzhou Biological Pharmaceutical Factory. It occurred between the end of July and the end of August last year. The factory used expired disinfectants while producing Brucella vaccines for animal use, which meant that the bacteria were not destroyed.

According to CNN, the contaminated gas containing the bacteria leaked into the air to the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, where the outbreak first occurred.

What is this bacterial disease and what are its symptoms?

This disease is also known as Maltese fever or Mediterranean fever. Its symptoms include: headaches, muscle aches, fever and fatigue, chills, sweats, loss of appetite, joint, muscle and back pain, diarrhea, and swollen glands.

Symptoms that can become chronic include arthritis or swelling in some organs, as reported by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from the United States.
