The mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB) a candidate for reelection was made official this Saturday, 12, in a virtual convention formatted to exalt the broad party alliance in its surroundings. Nine parties (in addition to the PSDB) closed with the toucan: DEM, Pode, MDB, PSC, Progressistas, PL, PROS, Cidadania and PV. This arc will guarantee Covas the longest exposure time in the electoral campaign on radio and TV.
Although the mayor avoids nationalizing the speech, his allies argued that Covas represents the vector of a coalition in the capital that aims to go beyond the municipal election and could be the first step on a front against the president Jair Bolsonaro in the National Congress and in the 2022 presidential election.
Covas was more careful and preferred to put himself as a name that puts the center back as a political force after a presidential election polarized by “extremes”. “Much more than 2022, the background of the candidacy is the resumption of the center as an important pole of the country. Much more important than the presidential election,” said the toucan at a virtual press conference after the act.
“I didn’t vote for him anymore (Bolsonaro) in 2018. I have no intention of campaigning for him in 2002. My candidacy represents the center. The center does have its importance and its political strength “, he added.
Among the politicians who spoke at the event were the mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), the mayor of Salvador, ACM Neto, president of the DEM, deputy Baleia Rossi, president of the MDB, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB) and the national president of the PSDB, Bruno Araújo.
“We live in a very difficult moment, of civilizational regression. With an unprepared president. May the spirit of the broad front guide us in this journey,” said former mayor Marta Suplicy, who broke with her party, Solidariedade, to support Covas in campaign. “We knew how to unite in the face of the greatest evil. At that moment I perceive a shadow in our city, which is a reflection of our homeland. The gravity of this situation has led me, since last year, to talk with all democratic forces in the sense of building a broad front, “he concluded.
Former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) said in his speech that the municipal election “is a preview of what may happen in the future” and that it is necessary “to take advantage of the campaign to give the feeling that (Brazil) may have a course “.
Appointed by the PSDB as a potential pre-candidate for the Planalto Palace in 2022, Governor João Doria made an incisive speech against Bolsonaro: “The true patriots are not only those who wear a green yellow shirt to blindly follow leaders who will not lead Brazil to a level of equality, justice and fraternity. Our green and yellow shirt defends democracy, diversity and compassion “, he said.
