Rise in contamination: transmission of the coronavirus does indeed seem to have resumed in Belgium

With 588 new cases of infection detected per day on average between September 2 and 8, the increase in new contaminations continues to accelerate, indicates Saturday the Institute of Public Health Sciensano in its daily epidemiological bulletin. Data for the last three days still need to be consolidated.

The average number of coronavirus infections rose to 588 per day between September 2 and 8, the Sciensano Public Health Institute said in its dashboard data update. This represents an increase of 29% from the previous week.

For the seventh day in a row, the average number of infections with the new coronavirus has increased in Belgium. The country has detected a total of 91,537 cases of Covid-19 contamination since the start of the epidemic.

The number of cases detected had, again Friday, increased by 22% compared to the previous seven-day period. Interfederal Covid-19 spokesperson and virologist at Sciensano, Steven Van Gucht, had spoken of a “slight acceleration” in the increase in new cases of infection. This acceleration therefore seems to be continuing.

The number of hospital admissions also increased to 22.3, an increase of 6.6%. A total of 19,239 people have been admitted to hospital due to the virus.

The number of new deaths is still decreasing slightly (-0.9%). Belgium now has a total loss of 9,919 people as a result of the coronavirus.

Finally, the country currently has 63.5 new contaminations per 100,000 inhabitants (+ 8%).
