Probiotics, also called “good bacteria”, are precious allies of our health. These are living microorganisms that we often eat without knowing it. They contain millions of bacteria, microbes and yeasts, naturally present in the body. But they do not all have the same value. Indeed, only some are interesting. When ingested in sufficient, regular and adequate amounts, probiotics may have beneficial effects on health. These microorganisms come into action once integrated into the intestinal flora, also called microbiote.

What are the functions of probiotics?

Microorganisms have multiple functions. They relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, regulate le transit intestinal, facilitate the digestion, decrease the frequency diarrhea and boost the immune system because they prevent infections. Another advantage: they act as a skin barrier.

Certain probiotics can also affect vaginal flora and mitigate osteoporosis, vaginal dryness, mucosal atrophy, if consumed before or at the onset of menopause. The bacteria will help the intestinal flora to reconstitute itself by eliminating germs harmful to the body. The naturopath Émilie Kapps advises women suffering from repeated vaginal yeast infection to take probiotics because the imbalance of the vaginal flora is linked to intestinal flora.

“After taking antibiotics, it is recommended to carry out a course of probiotics because these drugs destroy both good and bad bacteria. Taking probiotics before winter is also a good reflex. It helps strengthen the system. immune”, says naturopath Émilie Kapps.

Prebiotics and probiotics: what’s the difference?

Unlike probiotics, prebiotics are not living organisms. These are dietary fibers or nutrients found naturally in many foods, such as bananas, artichokes, garlic or rice. Prebiotics nourish and stimulate the growth of the good bacteria that colonize the intestines. We therefore have every interest in combining the two because they work in perfect symbiosis. The two complement each other and help rebalance the intestinal flora.

What are the most effective probiotics?

There are various varieties of probiotics. It is possible to find them in the form of food supplements or medication. In case of irritable bowel syndrome, it is recommended to take Bifidobacterium infantis 35624. If you suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), we opt for Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 and VSL # 3. Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 is recommended to relieve traveler’s diarrhea. To treat gastroenteritis in children and prevent diarrhea associated with taking antibiotics, it is advisable to take Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745.

Food: where are probiotics found?

Probiotics can be found in food supplements as well as medication, in pharmacies or drugstores. Fermented foods, in particular dairy products, also contain a large amount of probiotics. But fermented nutrients aren’t the only sources of probiotics. Naturopath Émilie Kapps lists foods rich in natural probiotics.
