EFE.- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), on Saturday delisted the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) from the possible criminal conduct of his former head, General Salvador Cienfuegos, detained and accused in the United States of protecting a drug cartel.

“Even if he turns out to be responsible, the behavior of General Cienfuegos is not the same as an institution like the Sedena,” said López Obrador when visiting San Pedro Tapanatepec, in the southern state of Oaxaca.

López Obrador pointed out that, although there is talk in the United States that there is evidence against Cienfuegos, who was arrested on Thursday in Los Angeles, he will wait for them to be presented because “it cannot be judged a priori.”

The Mexican president reiterated that if the Mexican general is shown to be involved in drug trafficking then “there must be punishment.”

I anticipate that if this responsibility is confirmed, then it will order a cleaning process of the Armed Forces. “If they are active they have to be withdrawn and put on trial for compliance with the law,” he said.

López Obrador pointed out that the fact that Genero García Luna, former security secretary of former President Felipe Calderón, and now the former head of the Sedena of Enrique Peña Nieto are detained and charged in the United States is a sign of the decomposition of the neoliberal regime.

“What is undoubtedly wrong is that two important former officials who have to do with security in the country are being detained in the United States on charges of ties to drug trafficking. It is very serious and is an unmistakable sign of the crisis of the decline of the regime, “he said.

He reiterated that he will wait for the results of the Cienfuegos case to find out if there was collusion with former Mexican president Peña Nieto. “It is part of the trial, we must not get ahead of ourselves.”

He asked the United States Anti-Drug Department (DEA) to report on the role it has played in Mexico because they lived with García Luna and Cienfuegos. “They also have responsibility, for example in the introduction of Fast and Furious weapons, a proposal and design applied from the United States.”

The president considered that the United States agencies that intervene in Mexico need self-criticism and reflection on their role in this country in which “they operated and entered with complete freedom; they did what they wanted ”, he added.

The president considered that what can be celebrated is that with these accusations a “new stage” is emerging in the country that will allow the sector of the press that criticizes him to understand the process that his government is leading.

Cienfuegos has been accused of allegedly protecting and helping the Mexican H-2 cartel in exchange for bribes and a United States Attorney’s Office charged him with three charges related to the production, trafficking and distribution of narcotics and a fourth linked to money laundering .
