This Sunday, the Palm Trees visit the Fortress, at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), in Castelão, for the 17th round of the Brazilian championship.
Still without hiring a coach after the resignation of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, last Wednesday, Verdão will be commanded by Andrey Lopes, who is a fixed assistant coach of the Palestrine Commission and will serve as an interim as long as a new commander is not made official.
Known for his work as an assistant coach for Dunga in the Brazilian national team, Andrey Lopes is known as “Cebola”, and has been at Alviverde since 2017, when he arrived to fill the position of Alberto Valentim as a fixed assistant at the Football Academy.
This, however, is not the first time that the gaucho will have the mission of being the palmeirense coach.
In 2019, after the dismissal of Mano Menezes, Andrey took over the team and led it in the last two rounds of the Brasileirão.
He had a perfect performance, with two wins in two games. His matches, in fact, ended up being marked by good stories.
The first was the rout by 5 to 1 over the Goias, on December 5, 2019, at Brinco de Ouro da Princesa, in Campinas.
At the time, Palmeiras became the 1st time winning by 2 to 1, with goals from Dudu and Zé Rafael, but could not take off in the complementary stage.
It was then that “Onion” decided to dare: he activated the young Gabriel Veron, who until then had only 14 minutes played by the professional team, to stir up the match.
And the change worked very (but very) well!
Veron joined the 13th in the 2nd half and, in the time he was on the field, scored two goals and also assisted Dudu to transform the victory into a thrashing.
From then on, the silver-house was consolidated in the adult squad of Verdão, and continues to occupy a prominent position today, being one of Alviverde’s great hopes.
In the next game of Andrey Lopes as coach, Palmeiras visited the cruise, who needed to win to avoid being relegated to Serie B.
In Mineirão, however, the team from São Paulo played a totally safe game, took advantage of the rival’s nervousness and won 2-0, with goals by Zé Rafael and Dudu.
The result ended up decreeing the fall of Raposa, which today is still in a terrible moment and is inclusive in the Z-4 of the Segundona.
After that, Alviverde announced the hiring of Vanderlei Luxemburgo as coach, and “Cebola” returned to play the role of fixed assistant.
This Sunday, however, it will be necessary for him to roll up his sleeves again and act as coach, trying to end the series of three defeats in a row for Palmeiras in the Brasileirão.
