BUENOS AIRES (AP) – Argentina on Thursday climbed to fifth place among the countries with the most cases of the new coronavirus in the world, surpassed only by the United States and Brazil on the continent.

The South American country accumulates 931,967 infected and is behind the United States, India, Brazil and Russia, according to data published by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Science and Systems Engineering.

Meanwhile, the dead are about 25,000 in the South American country, with one of the longest quarantines and that after almost seven months of isolation has become more flexible in various sectors.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández recently extended the quarantine until October 25.

Since the end of August, the pandemic spread to the cities of the interior while in Buenos Aires and nearby towns, where cases were concentrated at the beginning of the pandemic, the contagion curve has remained stable with a downward trend.

According to specialists, when the pandemic hit the capital in March in the interior provinces, there was an excess of confidence and its authorities did not know how to react when the cases began to grow during the southern winter.

Some experts consider that a more agile system for the detection of positive cases and more drastic and shorter quarantines should be implemented in localities where infections are increasing.
