The intention of the Government of further restrict the activity of bars and restaurants has caused concern e indignation equal parts in a sector that does not raise its head since the outbreak of the pandemic and that he feels “unfairly singled out”. The restoration accumulates a good part of the FOR HIM still in force and is at the tail of the economic recovery of the commercial sphere, so the new limitations that the Generalitat prepares to contain the increase in cases of coronavirus they will sink it even more, they warned yesterday from different employers’ associations and professional associations.
The director of the Barcelona Restoration Guild, Roger Pallarols, described it as “inadmissible” the plans of the Government, which will foreseeably specify today. The Executive had planned to meet yesterday afternoon with representatives of the Catalan restaurant unions to address the new limitations, but finally the meeting was postponed until this morning. The Generalitat shuffles different scenarios: from further restricting the hours and capacity of the premises to closing them completely for at least two weeks, in line with the “forcefulness” that they requested yesterday from Salut.
“The restaurateurs would understand the restrictions if we were contributing to increase the number of infections, but it is not like that,” insisted Pallerols, who urged the Government to focus on other areas. “The Generalitat has to change its strategy and seek the true source of contagion in other spaces of socialization that even today escape administrative supervision,” he insisted.
The activity of bars and restaurants is partially limited from July 18, with restrictions on indoor capacity and also on terraces, safety distance, tables with a maximum of six people or closures at 1 am. The Government has already approved major limitations for the restoration of fifteen municipalities of the Vallès Occidental with a high rebound of Covid-19. Bar consumption is prohibited in these establishments and the capacity, both indoors and outdoors, drops to 50%. The measure especially harms small businesses, which will have to reduce their clientele to a minimum, they warned yesterday from the Gremi de Restauració de Sabadell.
In the sector they do not understand that buses, subways and trains can be full of passengers at rush hour, without the possibility of maintaining a safe distance, while locals that comply with sanitary measures cannot maintain activity. “It makes no sense, we should focus on complying with security measures instead of closing or limiting activity”, defends Andrés Jover, spokesman for the restaurant sector of the Comertia association and founding partner of the La Burguesa restaurant chain.
From the sector they also regret the “null support” of the Generalitat to restaurant companies, which suffer billing drops of between 50% and 70%, depending on the operator and location. Neighborhood establishments, focused on a local public, are holding up the blow better, while demand has dropped drastically in premises located in office areas and tourist centers.
In this sense, the Gremi d’Hostaleria yesterday asked the Generalitat to compensate in some way the payment of rents and taxes if it is limiting business activity. The new restrictions could be the ultimate blow, they warned, for hundreds of companies and workers.
