Brazil recorded 12,342 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 290 deaths linked to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) and the Ministry of Health.

The new numbers raise the total infected to 5,094,979, while the death toll reaches 150,488. According to the Ministry of Health, 4,470,163 people recovered from the disease. Conass does not disclose the number of people recovered.

On weekends, data recording by Health Departments tends to be impaired due to difficulties in collecting information.

Several health authorities and institutions warn, however, that the actual numbers of cases and deaths are expected to be even higher, due to the lack of large-scale testing and underreporting.

São Paulo is the Brazilian state most affected by the epidemic, with 1,037,660 cases and 37,256 deaths. The total number of infected people in São Paulo exceeds those registered in practically all countries in the world, except the United States, India and Russia.

Bahia is the second Brazilian state with the highest number of cases, totaling 325,957, followed by Minas Gerais (322,936), Rio de Janeiro (283,675), Ceará (260,154) and Pará (237,938).

In terms of number of deaths, Rio is the second state with the most victims, totaling 19,308 deaths. Then came Ceará (9,134), Pernambuco (8,411), Minas Gerais (8,127), Bahia (7,128) and Pará (6,654).

The mortality rate per group of 100 thousand inhabitants in Brazil rose to 71.6, one of the highest in the world – it is only below the rates registered in Peru (103.89), Belgium (89.08) and Bolivia (73.04), not taking into account the dwarf countries like San Marino.

The Brazilian figure is much higher than that recorded in neighboring countries such as Argentina (53.00) and Uruguay (1.45), and also exceeds that of the USA (65.52), the nation most affected by the pandemic on the planet, and that of the United Kingdom (64.45) , European country with the highest number of deaths.

In absolute numbers, Brazil is the third country in the world with the most infections, behind only the United States, which add up to 7.7 million cases, and India, with 6.9 million. But it is the second in number of deaths, after the USA, where more than 214 thousand people died.

Altogether, more than 37.3 million people contracted the coronavirus worldwide, while more than 1 million died from the disease, according to a count maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
