The CDU has criticized the expansion of short-time allowance in the Corona crisis. This will “open the door to abuse”, said Christian von Stetten, member of the Bundestag CDU, of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”.
The Corona short-time work allowance is often misused for voluntary time off by employees who would otherwise not be paid. At the moment, “throughout Germany hundreds of thousands of people are being financed a year sabbatical at the expense of the general public without any financial involvement from their employers,” said the economic politician and chairman of the Union’s SME parliamentary group.
At the same time, the generous labor market aid enticed companies to relocate production abroad: “The metal industry offers clear examples here when subsidiaries abroad are fully utilized and the parts of the company in Germany only bring employees back from short-time working when the cheap foreign factories are overloaded”, said von Stetten.
He thinks the short-time work allowance in Germany is basically the right one to help industries affected by the Corona crisis. However, the easing of aid decided on because of the pandemic went far too far: unlike the current situation, companies should only be exempted from co-financing in justified exceptional cases, the CDU politician demanded.
