The celebrations for the 30th anniversary of German unity have started in Potsdam. 130 guests gathered for an ecumenical service. Because of the corona restrictions were no longer allowed.
In the Catholic provost church of St. Peter and Paul in the Brandenburg state capital, Berlin’s Archbishop Heiner Koch warned of further social polarization in Germany: “People can quickly let their democracy go to waste and squander democratic forms of life,” the bishop warned in his speech on the anniversary of the unification.
Can be dangerous Koch added: “Even if the free-democratic basic order is without a doubt the best that Germany has ever had in its history, this democracy is not a sure-fire success.” German society must again stand up for its democracy more strongly and consistently counter hostility. The “we with one another” should not turn into a “we against them”, otherwise it would be dangerous.
After the ecumenical service, the central ceremony in the Potsdam Metropolis Hall is to begin at 12 noon. The main speaker will be Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Among the participants in the celebrations are the heads of the constitutional organs: Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU), Federal Council President Dietmar Woidke (SPD), Constitutional Court President Stephan Harbarth and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). In addition, several prime ministers and state parliament presidents from the federal states take part.
The character of the unit celebrations had to be changed significantly due to the corona pandemic, and many planned events were canceled or rescheduled. Instead of large mass events, there was a single expo over four weeks in downtown Potsdam, the finale of which will take place this weekend.
