Chinese authorities organized three million diagnostic tests in two days in Qingdao (east), a city of nine million inhabitants that started a major testing campaign after the discovery of a small outbreak of coronavirus infections.
“At 8:00 am on October 13, the city had collected 3,078,528 samples,” announced the municipal health commission.
But streets in the port city, where the famous “Tsingtao” beer is produced, it was possible to observe long lines of people waiting for the test.
The authorities installed campaign tents in different parts of the city and mobilized health professionals.
Qingdao has detected a focus of 12 positive cases, six of them totally asymptomatic, according to local authorities.
Of the more than three million tests carried out, “we received the result of a total of 1,107,883 and did not detect any positive cases,” said the municipal health commission.
The aim of the authorities is that in five days all the inhabitants of the city are subjected to the test, but the results can take a while. The ability to organize diagnostic testing campaigns of such magnitude contrasts with the limited testing capacity in most countries.
China, the origin of the new coronavirus, claims that its territory is free from covid-19. Every day the country announces a dozen new cases, the vast majority of people who have traveled abroad.
