Duckduckgo integrates route planning for drivers and pedestrians

The search engine alternative Duckduckgo has expanded its previously very limited map application and integrated a route planner.

The new route planner from Duckduckgo should pay particular attention to privacy, as the users of the search engine know. The feature is based on Apple’s Mapkit JS framework. Special routes are calculated for pedestrians or drivers, but not for other means of transport.

“DuckDuckGo Search has so far lacked route planning. The integration means that our cards now have the functionality you expect “, tells Duckduckgo.

So far, Duckduckgo only displayed the relevant map section when searching for locations, without a route. There is now a new “Directions” button, which users can use to display corresponding routes.

The length and expected duration are calculated for each route. The fastest route is selected by default. The feature is more suitable for planning routes than for using it on the go – there is no navigation function.

No collection of personal data

As with the other search functions, privacy is also guaranteed with this feature, writes Duckduckgo. Accordingly, no personal data is collected or passed on.

Location information would be isolated from the other information transmitted by the browser and deleted after use. This could provide anonymous localized results.
