Hundreds of employees in the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof have to close on Saturday made aware of their branches. In whole North Rhine-Westphalia actions were planned in front of the department stores. In Düsseldorf, the employees gave vent to their displeasure with a sculpture by the artist Jacques Tilly. Parts of the workforce wore black T-shirts or mourning stickers. In Essen, a funeral campaign with wreath-laying in front of the branch was planned.

By the end of the month, around 35 Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt branches are closing. Some houses were open for the last time on Saturday. In North Rhine-Westphalia, branches in Essen, Dortmund, Hamm, Bonn and Düsseldorf are affected.

The Union Gave accused the management of mismanagement. “Many are not only infinitely sad about their job loss, they also feel justified anger at the current management,” said the union secretary Miriam Juergens.
