Lisbon, Oct 17 (EFE) .- Portugal plans field hospitals in Porto and Lisbon to relieve the pressure on health centers, since in recent days the number of inpatients has increased to over a thousand and there are a total of 144 patients from covid-19 in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The Porto health authorities foresee the opening of the field hospital in the coming days, since the northern Portuguese region is the one that advanced the most in the number of infected in recent weeks, while in Lisbon, according to the Portuguese Government, it has already reopened the Hospital of the Armed Forces and they plan a field hospital in the surroundings of the University City.

Portugal, which is in a state of calamity, registered a new record of positive cases of Covid-19 on Friday, with 2,608 infected, raising the total number since the pandemic began to 95,912, with 2,149 people dead.

Given this situation, the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said yesterday afternoon that it is not ruled out having to apply aggressive measures in case the pandemic worsens, such as establishing curfews as in other countries or even confinement total.

The Government awaits the support of Parliament to force the use of a mask on the street and promote the widespread use of “Stayaway Covid”, the virus tracking application that alerts people to positive contacts and which has sparked a tense political debate in Portugal .
