Five people died on Saturday afternoon in the collision of a microlight carrying two people with a tourist plane carrying three, in Loches (Indre-et-Loire), a rare accident which did not cause an additional victim to the ground.
“A small ULM carrying two people and a DA40 type tourist plane carrying three people telescoped around 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the first landing on the fence of a house in Loches, without causing any additional victim, the second at several hundred meters in an uninhabited area, “Nadia Seghier, secretary general of the prefecture of Indre-et-Loire, told AFP.
“The five people involved are dead. The small ULM crashed rue Aristide Briand, (less than two kilometers from downtown Loches, note) and the tourist plane in the Haut Jarry sector, a little outskirts of the town, not far from the water tower, “she said.
About fifty firefighters went to the site as well as about thirty gendarmes to set up road detours. “Agents of the aeronautical emergency services of Lyon were mobilized initially to locate the plane which was found quickly”, specified the prefecture.
The identity of the victims and the reasons for the collapse are still unknown.
“There are few reliable elements, we can think that there are five dead but it is not completely certain, there are two sure”, declared to AFP Grégoire Dulin, public prosecutor. of Tours, present on site.
According to testimony collected by AFP, the area of the accident is completely cordoned off by the gendarmes and the neighbors have been asked to stay at home. Firefighters, “criminal identification technicians”, are on site to identify the bodies. According to this testimony, the ULM landed on the home’s electric meter and caught fire.
The occupants of the house on which the ULM crashed were not there at the time of the accident. It is a residential area bordered by a busy road, south of the city center.
The house of associations of Loches was opened to receive the bodies of the victims and to constitute a funeral chapel there. A medico-psychological unit to support families, when they have been identified, will be set up.
An investigation was entrusted to the Loches gendarmerie brigade. The sub-prefect of Loches and the mayor of the town are also on site.
Fatal collisions between an ULM and another aircraft are rare. In Spain, seven people, including two minors, died in August 2019 when a helicopter and a motorized ultralight collided in the air over the island of Mallorca. There were no survivors.
In France, a man died in 2012 in the crash of his ULM following a collision with a glider in Savoie. The glider pilot managed to land unscathed.
In 2010, a small plane and an ULM collided in the sky in Eure-et-Loire, causing the death of the two pilots.
In Indre, two ULM pilots died after their aircraft collided in 2008.
In 2000, the pilot of an ULM died in a collision with a 2000-N mirage of the air force in Saône-et-Loire.
