Heatwave, summer season 2019, episode 2. That year, two heatwave waves had occurred in France, breaking the temperature record of 46 degrees. In 2020, there are no less than four heat peaks listed in the country. As a reminder, a period of high heat is qualified as a heat wave when the temperatures are five degrees higher than the seasonal norms, day and night. And this situation must last at least three days and three nights. Here are some useful questions during a heat wave.
How do you know when you are dehydrated? The most obvious sign is the feeling of thirst. But in the elderly and children, it is less marked. Unusual fatigue, pale complexion, loss of appetite, headaches or even fever should alert us.
Drinking sparkling water is more thirst-quenching? Sparkling water does not quench your thirst more or less than plain water, according to several American studies.
Why shouldn’t you drink alcohol when it’s hot? Because alcohol has a diuretic effect, that is to say, it promotes its elimination in the urine which causes the body to lose fluid and can therefore lead to dehydration.
Should we avoid eating certain foods? Yes, red meat is quite poorly digested. However, complicated digestion leads to an increase in body temperature. Fries, panini and pizza too: fat is the enemy of digestion. Too sweet pastries should also be avoided.
Can you water your garden? Yes, unless the prefect takes measures to limit water in the event of a drought. At threshold 1, watering lawns is prohibited from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The crisis threshold, level 2, prohibits all domestic watering.
