Four years after losing the Euro final at the Stade de France, the Blues have failed to take revenge against Ronaldo’s team.
Not sharp enough, the France team conceded a draw in Portugal (0-0), Sunday in Saint-Denis in the League of Nations, four years after the Portuguese victory against the French in the final of Euro-2016 and eight months before returning to the Selecçao at the next European Championship.
The Blues of Kylian Mbappé, who knew how to muzzle superstar Cristiano Ronaldo but failed to break through the Portuguese wall, remain co-leaders of their League of Nations group, ahead of the Portuguese on goal difference. They will meet them on November 14 for the return match in Lisbon, and on June 23 in Budapest at the end of the group stage of Euro-2020, postponed for a year.
A first success for Croatia
In this group A3, Croatia notched their first success by beating Sweden 2-1 in Zagreb. Both beaten by the French world champions and the Portuguese European champions in their first two matches, Croatia and Sweden were forced to react in this confrontation at the Maksimir stadium.
In front of several thousand fervent Croatian fans and in the pouring rain, the vice-world champions opened the scoring thanks to Nikola Vlasic in the 31st minute. Swedish captain Marcus Berg equalized in the 66th minute. But Andrej Kramaric, who had just come into play, gave the victory to the Croats at the end of the match (2-1, 84th).
Thanks to their first three points, the Croats leave the last place in the group to the Swedes. Croatia will receive France on Wednesday, without his midfielder Marcelo Brozovic who received a yellow card and will be suspended. Sweden will travel the same day to Portugal.
