Just hours have passed since the NBA ended its season with the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James champions, but the movements for the future in the rest of the league are already being seen and two very important occurred in the last hours: the agreement of Tyronn Read, DT champion with Cleveland Cavaliers and James in 2016, with Los Angeles Clippers; and resignation as manager of the Houston Rockets of Daryl Morey, largely responsible for the evolution of the game.

That of the executive of the Rockets was the most shocking of the novelties of Thursday in the league: He had 13 seasons in his position and 14 years in total with the team. That beginning in 2007 was tinted blue and white: Morey’s first hiring as general manager from Houston was the Argentine Luis Scola.

After the team’s elimination at the hands of the Lakers, Morey approached the franchise owner, Tilman Fertitta, to communicate that he had the idea of taking a step to the side. Both worked in that sense to arrive at a neat exit and, in fact, the manager will continue to be a kind of advisor while the Rockets look for their new coach after the departure of Mike D’Antoni to move away definitively on November 1.

“Leading this organization has been the most rewarding experience of my professional life,” Morey said in a statement.

Morey had a direct influence on the way basketball evolved over the past 15 years. With his academic background in Computer Science and an MBA, not only did he make his way into the NBA without ever playing or training, his approach also ended up being adopted by much of the league.

Lover of the analytical statistics that proliferate today in the game, he was the cultivator of the so-called “small ball”, the formations that resign height. That idea was not as adopted as the other, which definitely took American basketball by storm: that of the three-point shot as a deadly weapon and the sacrifice of the “long double”, the one that is thrown out of the paint.

Hand in hand with James Harden, whom Morey hired in 2012, and even more strongly in the last five years, the Rockets tripled their religion and, although they did not achieve a title, in the last six years they played two conference finals and three semifinals, in addition to leading the “super” Golden State of 2018 to a seventh game with Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant in the lead.

Morey will dedicate himself to his family for the moment and will evaluate options for an eventual return to the NBA. Regardless, his legacy is already underway and will not stop for many years.

After the blow that meant having been the team that best strengthened for the season and did not even reach the conference final, the Los Angeles Clippers sought to turn the tide and cut off relationship with their coach for the last seven years, Doc Rivers.

And this Thursday both ESPN and The Athletic confirmed that the successor will be Tyronn Read, who will go on to lead the team in which they stand out Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and will have the mission of dethroning LeBron, together with whom he won the NBA title in 2016 by turning – something unprecedented in history – the series that they lost 3 to 1 to Golden State.

Lue is no stranger to the Californian franchise – he was one of the outgoing coach’s assistants, so he knows the squad. In fact, as reported by ESPN, it has the support of the team’s main references, who were consulted about it during the search process.

One of your potential assistants could be Chauncey Billups, champion and MVP of the 2004 finals, when the Detroit Pistons surprisingly beat the Lakers 4 to 1.
