The 3 separate fish auctions set up in Urla district of IZMIR at one hour intervals attract the attention of those who want to buy fresh and affordable fish.
The fishermen from Izmir, who set out to sea by saying ‘Vira Bismillah’ at night, offer seafood such as mullet, sea bream, sea bass, horse mackerel, coral, shrimp and octopus to the citizens at auctions held every morning in Urla. The diversity of seafood that is hunted at night and sold in the morning enables citizens from neighboring provinces to come to the city. In sometimes contentious auctions, citizens who get what they want make their way home. Citizens emphasized that they often come to the fish auction because the products are fresh and sold at affordable prices. Nazire Çelik (48), who came to the fish auction, said, “I come because it is fresh and the prices are affordable. I come 3 days a week. I shop according to my budget.” Citizen Ali Eren (70) said, “I occasionally come for auction. I prefer it because it is fresh. It is hunted in the evening and sold in the morning. It is affordable,” he said.
Citizen Süleyman Armağan Altıntaş (65) said, “It is cheaper and fresh compared to the market. We come whenever we have the opportunity. I bought 1.5 kilo of sole fish for 75 liras.”Salih Aydin (55), the owner of the fish business, said, “I am trading this business. I’m at the meeting. Prices are cheap. I say people eat fish.”
