Infectologist Anthony Fauci said on Sunday (11.out.2020) that he did not agree to participate in election propaganda for U.S. President Donald Trump. The doctor, who is an adviser to the White House and the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, also said the statement used in the Republican’s campaign was taken out of context.
“In my nearly 5 decades of public service, I have never supported any candidate ”, the infectologist said in a statement to the CNN. “The statements attributed to me, without my permission, in the announcement of the Republican campaign, were taken from the context of 1 broad comment I made months ago on the actions of the federal public health authorities. ”
The ad went live last week. It addresses the Trump administration’s performance in the face of the covid-19 pandemic and the republican’s experience in contract the disease. “I can’t imagine that anyone could be doing more than that ”, says Fauci, implying that he supports the way Donald Trump led the health crisis.
The speech, however, is part of an interview that the doctor gave in March. In it, Fauci commented in general on the actions to combat the new coronavirus and the work of the task force created by the White House.
The infectologist said that “we never had a threat like this ”. “The coordinated response was… There are a number of adjectives to describe it, I think it’s impressive 1 of them. We are talking about all the players on the field (…) Since the beginning, when we recognized what it was, I have been dedicating almost all the time. I’m at the White House pretty much every day with the task force. It’s every single day. So, I can’t imagine that, under any circumstances, someone could be doing more. ”
Tim Murtaugh, Donald Trump’s campaign director, defended the propaganda. “The video is from an interview broadcast nationally on television, in which Dr. Fauci praised the work of the Trump administration. The words spoken are accurate and came straight out of Dr. Fauci’s mouth ”, said in a statement.
Through Twitter, Trump reiterated Murtaugh’s argument: “These are, in fact, Dr. Fauci’s own words. We did a ‘phenomenal’ job, according to some governors. Many people agree ”.
