(ANSA) – ROME, OCTOBER 12 – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson today will announce a new lockdown system with three levels of alert, “medium”, “high” and “very high”, as part of the strategy to contain the coronavirus epidemic in the country. Local media reported this, adding that a discussion is underway with local administrations on targeted lockdowns. Liverpool, according to the BBC, is expected to be the only city ranked in the highest category, meaning its pubs and restaurants are expected to close. The city recorded 600 cases of Covid for every 100,000 people in the week ending 6 October. The average for England was 74.
Johnson will chair a Cobra emergency committee meeting in the morning, then update parliament. A press conference by the premier is scheduled for the evening, together with the chief medical officer and the minister of economy.
The mayors of the north of England, where a tough squeeze has already been in place for weeks, are agitated because they fear that the forced closures will cause long-term economic damage. According to Downing Street, however, “this is a critical time and it is absolutely vital that everyone follows the clear guidelines established to help contain the virus. “
Britain has over 42,000 victims of Covid, the worst toll in Europe. Almost 13,000 people tested positive yesterday. (HANDLE).
