MACRON SUPPORTS WITH POUTINE THE OFFER OF DIALOGUE OF THE BELARUS OPPOSITION

PARIS (Reuters) – Emmanuel Macron, who spoke by telephone with Vladimir Putin, invited the Russian president to “take into consideration” the desire for dialogue expressed by the Belarusian opponent Svetlana Tsikhanouskaïa, the Elysee reported Thursday morning.

The French president met with the opponent on Tuesday during his trip to Lithuania, where the candidate from the united front of the opposition in the highly controversial presidential election on August 9 took refuge.

“President Macron recalled that Ms. Tsikhanouskaïa had said she was open to dialogue with Russia and encouraged President Putin to take it into consideration,” reports the Elysee.

“He reaffirmed his support for the Belarusian people and the need to help them lead the country towards a political transition”, continues the French presidency, which notes that the two leaders “share the idea that the solution is to resort to mediation of the OSCE “.

In his report of the interview with Emmanuel Macron, the Kremlin underlines that “the Russian leader reaffirmed the position of principle on the unacceptable character of any interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and any external pressure on the authorities legitimate “.

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, fell into an unprecedented political crisis after the proclamation of the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko after a ballot denounced as fraudulent by the opposition.

Lukashenko, in power since 1994, was received in mid-September by Vladimir Putin, who announced that Moscow was granting a $ 1.5 billion loan to Minsk while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reaffirmed that ” Alexander Grigorievich (Lukashenko) is the legitimate President of Belarus “.

For its part, the Belarusian opposition has increased calls for a dialogue with Moscow.

Invited Thursday morning on RTL, Svetlana Tsikhanouskaïa welcomed the involvement of Emmanuel Macron in the Belarusian crisis and clarified that it was not a question of putting pressure on Vladimir Putin.

“It’s an idea that bothers me a little bit, because it’s not about whether you want to influence his decision,” she added. “Communications with other countries as well as within our country must be placed under the sign of democracy, so no pressure.”

“We have always said that we want to remain open to dialogue,” she added. “But for all that, we have not necessarily had or received any signs of this from other neighboring countries. For that reason, it would be wonderful if President Macron could invite, for example, Mr. Poutin to participate, and would act as a mediator in this negotiation. “
