The roadster looks back on its origins and prepares to debut in a powerful version.

Mercedes is gearing up for a major lineup overhaul: CEO Ola Kallenius recently admitted that the German automaker has perhaps gone a bit over the top in recent years in wanting to fill all existing market segments. Without forgetting those he created, such as the 4-door coupes inaugurated by the CLS

In reality, the executive has mostly been talking about compact front-wheel drive cars, but we know there will be some big changes in the upper end of the lineup as well. for example the new Mercedes SL.

The most upscale convertible

Mercedes has already confirmed that the new S-Class will abandon both the Coupé and the Cabriolet variant, the latter reintroduced recently, and already sacrificed. Thus, the first large convertible luxury Mercedes, the 280 SE of the 60s, will still lose its heir, even if Mercedes does not give up a high-end “open” model. This role will fall exclusively to the SL roadster and we have a sense of what it should look like.

Our graphic designers were inspired by many photos of the camouflaged prototypes, surprised during the tests, sometimes released by the manufacturer itself, who started the indoor tests and then, at the end of the summer, took them out on the road. In these snaps, the details that appear through the camouflage, including the headlights and taillights, already appear to be the definitive elements of the upcoming production model.

Back to the canvas top

Other elements were offered by Daimler chief designer Gorden Wagener, who previously said the new roadster was inspired by the 1952 300 SL rather than the 1954 roadster.

The most obvious difference from the generation that this new SL will replace will be the return to the canvas top, which disappeared after the R129 series and again preferred to the retractable metal roof. As is the case elsewhere, especially at BMW Z4 with the latest Z4 or the new 4 Series), which saves space, weight and simplifies construction.

A nasty version

The production of the S-Class Coupé and S-Class Cabriolet will end next year and, more or less at the same time, the new generation of Mercedes SL should arrive, allowing to give commercial continuity to convertibles with “soft” roofs.

The debut could also be done directly with an AMG version, which we know is at an advanced stage of development. In the renderings, we therefore chose to explore this variant directly, by inserting the grille with vertical ribs typical of the current “Made in Affalterbach” models and inspired by the 300 SL “Panamericana”. Added to this are the aerodynamic kit, red brake calipers and the Biturbo V8 emblem.

Plug-in hybrid in the boxes?

In reality, we don’t yet know exactly what will be the engine of the top-of-the-range version of the new roadster: according to some sources it will be the 730bhp V8 of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. For others, a plug-in hybrid, still based on the turbo V8, but marked with the new SL 73e logo and a development aiming to reach 800 hp.

In any case, at least two powerful versions with quadruple tailpipes are currently being tested, one with round tailpipes, the other with a trapezoidal section.
