At a press conference, the general director of Health, Ashley Bloomfield, assured that the man was already examined a few hours after presenting symptoms of covid-19 last Friday.
However, he added that there was little risk of the virus spreading since it was likely that he contracted it from abroad, this after tracking a person who tested positive after returning from the United Arab Emirates.
The man had worked on two ships docked in the ports of Auckland and Taranaki, but he was not directly in the largest city in the country. The ship was due to arrive in the Napier region on Sunday.
