It was on October 14, 1964 that Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting racial inequality through non-violence. Luther King was an American Baptist pastor and political activist who became the most prominent figure and leader of the civil rights movement in the United States from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is widely known for the struggle for political rights through non-violence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent activism.

The day was also marked when in 1982 the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, proclaimed a War on Drugs.
