After years of silence, the merchants in the Borgo Vecchio district of Palermo rebelled against the racket and denounced the mafia extortionists: 20 bosses, wingmen and debt collectors of the clan were stopped by the police. The suspects are accused in various ways of mafia association, criminal association aimed at drug trafficking, theft and receiving stolen goods, attempted aggravated murder, extortion and damage.
The extortions ascertained during the investigation coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate led by the Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, are over twenty, thirteen of which were discovered thanks to the spontaneous reports of the victims.
In five cases, however, the traders admitted to paying after being summoned by the investigators. An extraordinary result in a neighborhood where fear allows Cosa Nostra to have a capillary control over commercial activities. The investigation that led to the detention is the continuation of past investigations into the mafia district of Porta Nuova and, in particular, the mafia family of Borgo Vecchio.
