US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Saturday that the new $ 1.8 trillion economic stimulus proposal by the Donald Trump administration is “one step forward, two steps back ”And that it will need changes to count on the support of Democrats in Congress.
In a weekly message to fellow Democrats, Pelosi said the Trump proposal lacks “a strategic plan to crush the virus” and gives the president too much freedom to decide how resources are to be allocated.
“At this stage, we have not yet agreed on many priorities, and Democrats are waiting for government communication on various provisions as negotiations on the plan continue,” Pelosi said in the message.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin mentioned the $ 1.8 trillion proposal in a 30-minute telephone conversation, according to the White House.
The Trump administration’s new proposal is bigger than Mnuchin’s $ 1.6 trillion offer earlier and is closer to the $ 2.2 trillion that the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved last week.
