Pompeo calls for think-tanks ‘funding’

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced to US think tanks and academic institutions that they announced the funds they received from foreign countries, otherwise their access to the Ministry would be stopped.

Making a written statement on the subject, Pompeo stated that China and Russia made huge donations to think tanks in order to increase their influence in the USA.

In his statement, Pompeo noted that as the Ministry, they cooperate with many think tanks and academic institutes in foreign policy in order to advance the interests of the United States, and they respect different opinions, “However, we are aware that countries such as China and Russia are trying to influence US foreign policy through these think tanks.” said.

Emphasizing that it is necessary for think tanks to explain the financing they receive from outside in order to protect the integrity of non-governmental institutions, Pompeo stated that otherwise, the Ministry officials would consider this situation and that these organizations would stop their access to the Ministry.

Pompeo used the following statements:

“Now Department staff will pay attention to the specific sources of funding described when entering into joint projects with these organizations or when deciding how to work. This policy differs from disclosure requirements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
