What is quercetin?
Quercetin (or quercetin The quercetolo) is a natural substance that belongs to the Family of Flavonoids and which is present in many plants, beverages, herbal extracts, cereals, vegetables and fruits.
We find it, for example, in apples, olives, blueberries, onions, capers, red wine and broccoli.
We are talking about a pigment that brings multiple health benefits and that can be taken through a varied and balanced diet, but also by resorting to targeted supplements.
Characteristics of quercetin
This element is basically the most abundant flavonoid present in the daily diet: it is estimated, in fact, that each person consumes an average of 10-100 mg per day through the various foods he brings to the table.

Furthermore, it contributes to slow down the onset of various pathologies such as atherosclerosis, arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, cardiovascular disease and chronic brain disorders. Not to mention that it also tends to regulate and lower blood pressure, relieving allergies and skin problems.
But that’s not all: this substance, in fact, is a real cure-all in case of hemorrhoids, venous insufficiency, heaviness and swelling in the legs and capillary fragility.
Quercetin how to take it
This element can be taken through food, but also by resorting to special supplements of bioflavonoids with quercetin which can be purchased in powder or capsule form. Keeping in mind that the foods most rich in quercetin are onions, apples, grapes, broccoli, citrus fruits, tea and capers.
A correct intake of this flavonoid allows to increase the immune response, fight inflammation and allergies and improve physical and mental performance.
As a rough guide, don’t take more than 1,000 mg of quercetin per day. An excessive dosage, in fact, can have several contraindications and cause a variety of symptoms such as headaches, stomach pains or tingling sensations.
In addition, it is good to consult your doctor before taking quercetin in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, if you have problems with prostate or if you suffer from particular pathologies.
Quercetin and covid-19: is it effective?
According to some recent international studies, foods containing quercetin would be able to fight Covid-19. According to an article published in the magazine International journal of biological macromolecules, for example, this substance would be able to destabilize the protein (3CLpro) of the virus which affects its development.
Professor Michael Lisanti, who in the journal, also expressed a positive opinion on a possible efficacy in this sense of quercetin Aginghe illustrated – without however reporting any irrefutable data, nor any scientific evidence – how this substance can represent a new way of healing against the coronavirus.
On the other hand, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – or the US government body that deals with the regulation of food and pharmaceutical products – which has spoken out strongly against these theories, distrusting companies to promote foods and supplements containing quercetin as possible anti-Covi-19 products.
