Brazil is full of architectural treasures, such as the Sé Cathedral located in Sao Paulo. And when you go to Rio de Janeiro, there is inevitably one place not to be missed: it is l’Escadaria Selarón. This staircase, as we know it today, dates from 1990 and is located between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa.
A somewhat special restoration
Very damaged after a few years, the 215 steps had to be simply renovated, except that the creator of this little masterpiece, the Chilean Jorge Selarón, wanted to bring his personal touch, with a perfectly assumed Brazilian note.
As is often the case with works of art, this one was initially criticized by the neighborhood, apparently a little classic and not really favorable to change. Yet the choice of colors was a true ode in Brazil, since the fragments of tiles used for the renovation of these steps bore the colors of the flag, namely blue, green and yellow.
The staircase has become a real tourist attraction
Today, the Selarón staircase attracts tourists from all over the world passing through Rio. With its colors, the place is perfect for making photoshoots, advertising or film shoots. Remember Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams’ song Beautiful, released in 2002? Go take a look at the video clip (superb) and you will be able to see this famous staircase of Selarón several times.
