RJ Court of Justice determines release of Cristiane Brasil

Justice determined the release of the former federal deputy Cristiane Brasil and former Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Education Pedro Fernandes.

The decision, taken this Thursday (15.out.2020), is from the 5th Criminal Chamber of the TJ-RJ (Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro). The judges unanimously decided to replace pre-trial detention with precautionary measures, including overnight pick-up and delivery of passports. The decision also reached businessman Flávio Salomão Chadud.

The former deputy and Chadud had preventive custody decreed last month, in an operation that also led to the arrest of the then state secretary of Education Pedro Fernandes.

In the case of Fernandes, who presented, at the time of arrest, the exam confirming that he was with covid-19, the precautionary measure was converted from preventive to home. However, on September 30, after completing quarantine, he was taken to Bangu prison 8.

Cristiane Brasil, Flávio Chadud and Pedro Fernandes were arrested in the 2nd phase of Operation Cataract, for alleged deviations in social assistance contracts, between 2013 and 2018, which cost almost R $ 120 million to public coffers.

Former deputy Cristiane Brasil is the daughter of PTB president Roberto Jefferson, and was pleading for a vacancy as a candidate for the mayor of Rio when the arrest decision came, which ended up making her political plans unfeasible.
