In a special participation in the live of Gazeta Esportiva this Thursday, the coach Rodrigo Santana talked about the beginning of his career at Atlético-MG, his departure from the club and he hoped for a future return to Galo. The professional was fired from Atlético in October 2019.
“When I took over, the board’s intention was always very clear, which was to seek a coach. But as time went by, the results came, some technicians started to negate us and we were advancing in the South American Cup of Brazil. I gained the trust of the group, the press asking, cheering asking, ”said Rodrigo about taking office.
Rodrigo Santana reached the semifinals of the Copa Sudamericana with the Minas Gerais team and ended up eliminated by the Colon, from Argentina. For him, the elimination made all the difference in his future in the club since in the Brasileiro the team was doing very well.
“I think my work was surprising. When I assumed the team had low self-esteem, the group was discredited. The press itself said that with that cast, the Rooster would not have much hope. And we ended up being a South American semifinalist… ”
“At one point it was difficult to funnel into an international competition and keep up with the Brazilian, especially because our squad was very small. I believe that if we won the South American, or at least a final, I think I would be there today. Maybe one day I’ll be back, ”said the coach.
Currently without a club, Rodrigo spoke about the expectations of the Sampaoli Rooster for the current season, in addition to the financial issue and how the club has been active in the market, looking for pieces requested by the Argentine coach:
“It is the dream of any coach. Being in a club where the cashier is strong, you point out the problems and bring you the solution. Atlético are doing a spectacular job. They are very focused on this title … We gave a base to the team today. Everyone is doing very well and it’s a very promising year for Atlético ”, he concluded.
