The second day of ‘Tennis & Friends’ took place, one of the most important events in the field of disease prevention in Italy, now in its tenth edition. At the Pietrangeli stadium of the Foro Italico debates and tennis matches alternated, while in the 18 health facilities of 5 regions that have joined the event, free preventive medical examinations continue (by reservation).

Important specialists from the medical world spoke yesterday, such as Professor Francesco Cognetti, director of the Department of Medical Oncology of the National Cancer Institute ‘Regina Elena’ in Rome, Professor Francesco Vaia, director of the Spallanzani hospital, and Antonio Giuseppe Rebuzzi, director of the Cardiological Intensive Care Unit of the ‘Agostino Gemelli’ Polyclinic.

This morning, however, it was the turn of Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, recently appointed president of the Commission for the reform of health care and social and health care of the elderly population by the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza. In the afternoon the Minister of Sport, Vincenzo Spadafora spoke and there was also a talk with Manuela di Centa, Gianni Rivera, Valentina Vezzali and Massimiliano Rosolino. On the purely tennis side, challenges were held with personalities from the world of entertainment and sport as protagonists: from Paolo Bonolis to Jimmy Ghione and Roberta Vinci.

Among the 18 health facilities that have joined the event there are, in Lazio, the San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital (specialist visits to Cardiology, Vascular, Dentistry and Diabetology), the San Carlo di Nancy hospital (specialist visits to Orthopedics and Urology), the Cristo Re hospital (specialist visits to Pneumology and Cardiology), the Villa Betania nursing home (specialist Cardiology visits and Urology) and the Celio Military Polyclinic (specialist visits to Cardiology and Dermatology); in Lombardy, the Grande Metropolitan Niguarda Hospital (specialist visits to Senology, Cardiology, Diabetology); in Campania the Buon Consiglio Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Naples (specialist cardiology and traumatology visits) and the San Leonardo Castellammare di Stabia hospital (gynecological examination with trans-vaginal ultrasound); in Puglia, the Mater Dei Hospital in Bari (specialist visits to Cardiology and Senology) and in Sicily the Buccheri La Ferla Fatebenefratelli hospital in Palermo (specialist visits to Physiology and Cardiology).

These are the main total numbers after the first 9 editions: 356,000 admissions, 94,936 free check-ups carried out, from which over 6,200 patients were recalled for further investigations and pharmacological treatments within the National Health Service.

“The message we want to get to the citizens – explains Professor Giorgio Meneschincheri, creator and president of ‘Tennis & friends’ – is that prevention cannot wait for the end of the pandemic. Deaths from cancer, hematological and cardiovascular diseases increased during the lockdown. The fear of contagion has removed 20% of cancer patients from hospitals, as well as a 50% reduction in hospitalizations for heart attacks. With prudence and in compliance with the rules, it is therefore necessary to return to prevention, guaranteeing the continuity of treatment and screening.

The tenth edition of Tennis & Friends – continues the expert – is special for this very reason: it puts health and prevention at the center. From the annual census collected in the volume ‘Cancer numbers 2020’ presented in recent days at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità – underlines the professor – it is clear that the number of people recovered from cancer: 3.6 million people live after a diagnosis. The data therefore confirm the need to continue investing in prevention even in this moment of health emergency “.

The event is also made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the Ania Foundation and the partners: Eni, Peugeot, Intesa Sanpaolo, Sanofi, Fastweb, Poste Italiane, Centrale del latte, Msd, Bnl Gruppo Bnp Paribas, Aci and Samsung.
