“The message we want to get to the citizens – explains Professor Giorgio Meneschincheri, creator and president of ‘Tennis & friends’ – is that prevention cannot wait for the end of the pandemic. Deaths from cancer, hematological and cardiovascular diseases increased during the lockdown. The fear of contagion has removed 20% of cancer patients from hospitals, as well as a 50% reduction in hospitalizations for heart attacks. With prudence and in compliance with the rules, it is therefore necessary to return to prevention, guaranteeing the continuity of treatment and screening.
The tenth edition of Tennis & Friends – continues the expert – is special for this very reason: it puts health and prevention at the center. From the annual census collected in the volume ‘Cancer numbers 2020’ presented in recent days at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità – underlines the professor – it is clear that the number of people recovered from cancer: 3.6 million people live after a diagnosis. The data therefore confirm the need to continue investing in prevention even in this moment of health emergency “.
