The 2021 edition of the Murten Festival of Lights (FR), sixth of the name, will not take place, due to the coronavirus crisis. An alternative program adapted to the health situation could be put in place.
The festival was to unfold its splendor from January 13 to 24. After consultation with the Covid-19 coordination cell of the canton of Friborg and the cantonal doctor, the organizing committee obviously had to resolve. The conditions necessary for the smooth running of the festival cannot be met.
Over the years, the Moratois event has managed to make a place for itself among the major events in Switzerland since its first edition in 2016, the organizers recalled Friday. Last year, more than 90,000 people again converged on the medieval city of Friborg during the twelve evenings of the festival.
The organizers hoped until the last moment to be able to ward off fate, with a festival respecting an adapted concept of protection. However, the circumstances, with the worsening of the last few days, and the restrictions imposed make the unfolding of the event impossible in its usual form.
An alternative program is however envisaged “in order to offer despite everything a platform to the artists and to bring a spark of light in this dark year”. It will be implemented in the coming weeks. The final aspect of the project under consideration will be unveiled shortly, also depending on health developments.
