There will only be three ovals in the 2021 championship of the IndyCar, whose calendar was presented this Thursday.
Although 17 events are held for next year, there will only be visits to the Indianapolis, Gateway and Texas road courses; in the latter, two races will be held.
The reasons are mainly financial, which worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic. Iowa Speedway, owned by NASCAR, it is in serious trouble and its future is uncertain.
Richmond Raceway, who originally returned to the calendar this year, opted to break his three-year contract, having no sponsor. In fact, this track only had one NASCAR race weekend without an audience this year and one was canceled.
It is a situation that also happens with the Circuit of the Americas, that despite maintaining a space in the Formula 1 agenda and host the NASCAR Cup in 2021, He is not very clear about his future, especially with plans to create complexes around the facilities.
In this way, in addition to the 105th edition of the “Indianapolis 500” of May 30, there will be a double date in Texas on May 1 and 2 and Gateway will be visited in the second half of August.
The campaign will start on March 7 and St. Petersburg, host of this year’s final, followed by Alabama and Long Beach, which canceled their 2020 races due to the pandemic.
Leaving Iowa allows you to change the date of Mid-Ohio to July, opening a space to have a joint event with NASCAR in mid-August at the Indy co-ed circuit. Besides Texas, Detroit it will be the other double round.
The end of the campaign will be in Laguna Seca, on Sunday, September 19.
