WASHINGTON (AP) – Forced to play defense to conserve Electoral College votes, President Donald Trump visits Iowa on Wednesday, a state that won by a wide margin in 2016 but where Democrat Joe Biden is on the rise.

The busy travel schedule this week, including an event in the next few hours in Des Moines, reflects that the three-week stretch to election day is an uphill battle for the president. He passed through Pennsylvania and Florida, and will go to another disputed, likely crucial state – North Carolina – as well as Iowa and Georgia, which Trump thought he had in his pocket but where recent polls show Biden’s rise.

The two candidates adjusted their campaigns on Tuesday to motivate voters who may well be decisive in next month’s election.

Biden, who has not scheduled public events for Wednesday – unusual for 20 days before the election – went to Florida on Tuesday to court older voters. His intention was to deliver a knockout blow to Trump in a state the president needs to win, another sector where the Republican has lost support.

Trump visited Pennsylvania, arguably the most important state on the electoral map, where he launched fierce attacks on Biden’s physical fitness to serve in office.

“It’s over, people. I’m sorry to say, it’s over, ”Trump told a crowd in Johnstown. He said his triumph was all the more necessary given that Biden was the worst presidential candidate of all time. “Can you imagine losing to a guy like this? Is incredible”.

In his second event after contracting COVID-19, Trump spoke for more than an hour before thousands of people, without social distancing and with very few face masks. He looked sane by stating that it was a thing of the past and threatened to kiss some of those present to demonstrate his immunity.

Biden spent the day in Florida, his third visit to the state in a month, to expand his message to older voters. For Trump, “you are disposable, forgettable, you are practically nobody,” he said at a senior center in Pembroke Pines, 20 miles from Fort Lauderdale.

“It seems like the only older person Trump cares about is himself,” he added.
