UGT has begun this Friday the cleaning of the statue in Madrid of Long Knight, located next to the Nuevos Ministerios, which was attacked a few days ago, in an act in which the general secretary, Pepe Alvarez, has accused the leader of the Vox, Santiago Abascal, to “mark and aim” and to shoot his “puppies”.

“Today, against the statue of Largo Caballero; tomorrow, let’s see who. Let them think about where they are taking this country” has alerted Álvarez, who also reminded the leader of the Vox of the time in which he was also indicated in the Basque Country because of the ETA environment.

The leader of the UGT has described as a “terrorist act” against historical memory and coexistence the graffiti that suffered the statues of the political and union leaders Largo Caballero and Indalecio Prieto, and in which they were branded as assassins.

Álvarez has accused the Popular Party of trying to mislead the population of Madrid with the withdrawal of both figures from the street to hide the situation of the pandemic in Madrid.

Likewise, it has ensured that the UGT is studying whether the removal of the plates has been in accordance with the law so that, if it were not, present a complaint for prevarication against the Madrid City Council.

“Every time they come to paint, we will come to clean”

Álvarez has appealed to the conscience of the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, and the leader of the Popular Party, Pablo Casado, whose grandfather was a militant of the UGT, so that they do not allow these acts to have a majority in the plenary session of the capital: “I ask you for historical rigor so that fascism does not enter the town hall.”

Workers affiliated with the UGT have been in charge of cleaning the base of the Largo Caballero statue. After removing the paint stains, Pepe Álvarez, together with the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Diaz; the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera; and the Minister of Transport, Jose Luis Ábalos; they have placed a bouquet of red roses at the feet of the socialist leader.

In the same way they have done it in the statue of Indalecio Prieto, which will have a special cleaning process due to the material with which it is built, directed by the ministry headed by Ribera.

“Every time they come to paint, we will come to clean,” Álvarez concluded.
